Controversial skate park decision looming

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AFTER MONTHS of debate, the contentious location of the Halswell Skate and Recreation Park will finally be decided on Thursday. City councillors will vote on whether to approve the location of Halswell Domain, preferred by the RiccartonWigram Community Board, with a smaller skate park at Knights Streams Sports Park. The issue has been controversial with three petitions submitted to the city council on the issue. Two against the skate park being located in Westlake Reserve and Halswell Domain, and one petition for the concept. If approved, the skate park will be located next to the playground in the Halswell Domain. It is expected to cost about $380,000, which includes community consultation, design and construction. The domain was one of four locations to be mooted, which also included Knights Stream Sports Park, Westlake Reserve and Scott Park. The petition against the Halswell location was signed by 600 people,

who among other reasons feared the skate park would attract anti-social behaviour. But the petition supporting the skate park had 800 signatures. Twelve deputations were made at the July community board meeting, including some from Halswell children and some from youth workers who said fears of anti-social behaviour were unfounded. Out of 280 submissions made to the city council, 60 per cent were in support of the Halswell Domain location as their first choice.

Inside

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK MONTHS OF petitions and letters to the editor on the controversial Halswell skate park, will boil down to just a few minutes at the city council on Thursday. The big decision will be made and, hopefully, then the kids will be able to skate. A lot has been written that skate parks attract anti-social behaviour but as a former youth worker, I saw very little of that type of behaviour, but far more of kids having fun mastering their tricks and having somewhere to go with their mates. Keeping in the skating theme, we have Evel Knievel on page 8 this week in the form of Kay Newton who does roller derby. She has represented New Zealand at the the 2011 World Cup in Toronto and the 2014 tournament in Dallas. Hei kona, Shelley Robinson

News Traffic concerns near school By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AN AIDANFIELD resident is urging the city council to resolve traffic concerns near a school, fearing there could be a fatality. Murray Holmwood, who lives near the school, is concerned Aidanfield Drive is a dangerous road for children to cross due to the increasing traffic level. Investigations are under way by the city council to install a pedestrian refuge island and crossing point at a new location on the road with improved sight lines. It is estimated the two projects will together cost about $105,000 but final estimate costs are not yet available, said city council’s manager operations Steffan Thomas. Mr Holmwood said the road only has minimal safety measures in place to get traffic travelling at 80km/h, from Wigram Rd and Halswell Rd, to slow down for children attending the school. The current speed limit on Aidanfield Drive is 50km/h. “There is nothing really around here to get them to slow

down. There is just a little sign on the light pole that there is a school down here,” Mr Holmwood said. A survey conducted by Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngster co-ordinator Anne Galloway showed about 50 families in the area were concerned with the number of cars often speeding along the road. “That is one of the reasons I mentioned this to Anne, it reminds me of a similar sort of thing to act a bit sooner and do something better,” Mr Holmwood said. Mr Holmwood, is an employee of Lyttelton Port Company. A workmate, Bradley Fletcher, was killed in 2014 when a scissor crane fell over at the port. The accident is what ignited Mr Holmwood to work alongside with the Halswell Residents’ Association, Aidanfield Christian School, the community board and Mrs Galloway to make the road safer for children crossing it. Mrs Galloway said they wanted the city council to install an upgraded crossing and put a 40km/h sign around the school.

IMPROVING SAFETY: Aidanfield resident Murray Holmwood and Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngster co-ordinator Anne Galloway have been working to ease traffic concerns on Aidanfield Drive.

Hornby High School principal Robin Sutton writes about the effectiveness of digital technology in education The world of work is changing. Well, the world is changing – and it is changing so fast that it can leave us breathless. Who would have thought that within five years we may see driverless cars on the roads of Christchurch, or that the city council would be installing electric car charge points in parking buildings? This makes it really difficult for schools to know how best to prepare our students for their future. Schools have traditionally been seen as places from which you acquire knowledge. Over the past fifteen years, however, our very definition of knowledge has changed. Whereas we once thought of knowledge as ‘stuff’ like facts,

processes etc – now we see it as stuff, and being able to do something with that stuff. It has moved from being a noun to a verb. This means that more than ever before, schools need to develop skills and dispositions in students rather than simply fill their heads. Our model of learning has shifted: we can no longer see students’ minds as empty vessels to be filled. We hear from employers that we need to provide them with people who are able to learn, and they will give them employment specific facts and skills. This includes those important dispositions like persistence and resilience, the ability to collaborate, to think critically and creatively. Digital technology is a vital tool. It is no coinci-

dence that this has become a part of the New Zealand curriculum. Hornby High School is a part of the Hornby Manaiakalani Outreach Hornby cluster. Modelled on the Tamaki cluster in Auckland, the programme uses the pedagogy “Learn Create Share” to define work with students, using devices (currently Google’s Chromebooks) as the essential digital tool. The Tamaki experience revealed dramatic impacts on student learning, engagement and results. Students acquire knowledge, create authentic products with that knowledge and then share it with the world, perhaps as published work, or the solution to a real world problem. The learning is powerful, the impact profound, and it requires students to have devices in their hands. Google’s Chromebook is the most affordable solution to that challenge. It’s a big ask for many families, but the return on their investment is huge.

News Rare disorder brings out good Samaritans By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A FORMER Burnside High School student is fundraising so she can go to the United States for treatment of a rare connective tissue disorder. Gendi Roberts, 20, needs treatment for Ehlers Danlos syndrome, which she was diagnosed with when she was eight-yearsold. She suffers from dislocations, bruising and various other ailments as a result of the syndrome. “I started having severe head aches, tingling, numbness, my vision got a lot worse, as well as my hearing,” she said. “It took a few years to get the syndrome diagnosed because it is quite rare.” For the past five years, her body has been deteriorating rapidly due to the syndrome. She is looking to cover the costs of treatment, further scans and a ticket to get her mother over to Baltimore for support. Her efforts have been made easier after Mike Pero Real Estate Harewood salesman Garry Huata paid for her ticket to Baltimore. Through family and friends living in Baltimore, Miss Roberts

has an appointment to see American neurosurgeon Dr Fraser Henderson. “It is pretty amazing; I am very excited,” she said. She was diagnosed with a multitude of spinal and brain complications as a result of the syndrome only two months ago. As there’s no further treatment available in New Zealand, Miss Roberts had to search for overseas alternatives.

Dr Henderson’s focuses on developing treatments for injuries to the brain stem and spinal cord. He has been credited with inventing 11 devices and concepts relating to the syndrome. When Miss Roberts returns home, she plans to finish her degree to become a medical laboratory scientist. To support Miss Roberts’ treatment go to https://givealittle. co.nz/cause/genditousadoctors#

Community man honoured with plaque THE FORMER chairman of the Halswell Residents’ Association has been acknowledged for his work in the community after chairing the association for the past 22 years. Ron Fensom was presented a plaque of Halswell Quarry stone mounted on rimu by the current residents’ association chairman John Bennett. The celebration was held at The Old Vicarage Cafe, Restaurant and Bar last week. Mr Fensom retired in July but will continue as a committee member. Former city councillor Bob Shearing; Halswell Lions and Returned and Services’ Association member Paul O’Connor; and Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora were invited to the event as guest speakers. Halswell Residents’ Association member Ross McFarlane said the guest speakers spoke about their admiration of Mr Fensom. He has lived in Halswell for about 55 years. A highlight for Mr Fensom was when his work was acknowledged in 2004 when he

was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal. In his time as chairman, Mr Fensom’s work has included maintaining lower speed limits in the area and getting a memorial in Wigram to remember the men who lost their lives when two planes collided near the former Wigram air base. He instigated the ANZAC parade at the Halswell War Memorial in 2002 and has been organising the event for the past 14 years. He also helped get the Halswell Domain an extra 11ha of land. Mr Mora presented Mr Fensom with a city council certificate of appreciation while Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson made a floral presentation.

Election sign theft By Georgia O’Connor-Harding IT’S THAT time again when campaign signs start being vandalised or, in the case of a young Riccarton candidate, stolen. Catherine Chu, 20, who is running for the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board, has had about 18 campaign signs and car magnets removed. They were stolen from Canterbury University, Blenheim Rd and central Riccarton. One sign was stolen in Avonhead and then put back up. Community board chairwoman Helen Broughton, who has aligned with the Independent Citizens political group, which includes Miss Chu, said it was possible someone had taken “a liking” to her. City councillor Jamie Gough was well-known for having his election posters stolen by young admirers in previous elections. But Miss Chu said it was unlikely that she was in the same situation as Cr Gough. “My photos aren’t that flash. I don’t think my looks are that good enough, you know, for people to be removing them for that purpose,” she said.

RESTORATION: Strengthening and repair work is set to begin on a historic stone building at Halswell Quarry Park.

STOLEN SIGNS: Riccarton-Wigram Community Board candidate Catherine Chu’s election signs have been the target of thieves.

The local body elections are coming up next month with voting papers to be sent out on September 16. Miss Chu is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Chinese, at Canterbury University. It will be her first time standing for a community board. She said having the signs removed has been “stressful” while campaigning. While she doesn’t want to

LAWyerS

make a big deal out of the missing signs, she wants it to stop. “The Riccarton people are so kind and so supportive. I wouldn’t imagine that it is the Riccarton area that is affecting the billboards,” she said. Depending on the size, Miss Chu’s billboards cost between $10-$50 each, while her car magnets cost $40-$60. Her sister, Linda Chen, will be standing for the Harewood Community Board.

Espresso maker by day – world Kay Newton spends her spare time in safety gear speeding around a track on roller skates. She spoke to Caitlin Miles about how she got into roller derbies and her time representing New Zealand at world cup competitions FIRSTLY I have to ask what your roller derby name is? It’s Evilknevil, I picked it because it just worked really well with the fact my name is Kay. Can you tell me why you decided to get into roller derbies? There was myself and a couple of others talking about it one day and we decided to go to watch a practice and see what was involved and it just seemed really fun so we thought we would do it. Can you explain to me what is involved in a roller derby? Well, it’s played on an oval track and you have 14 people from each team on the side lines. ADVERT.pdf But thereNEW areLOCATION only five people on1 the track at any one time. But

players rotate throughout the game so that’s why there is so many. There is a jammer who is the one designated to score points by lapping people on the 1/05/2014 11:51:35 a.m. opposite team and then the other four are blockers. Most people

can be blockers, you can have any body type really, but jammers are usually a bit slighter built and have good stamina. Jams, which are the sessions, have a time limit of two minutes

as well. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a lot of fun. Are you a jammer? I was for a few years. Not any more though, because we have a lot of jammers in our team so we

need more blockers. Is being a blocker quite violent? I would avoid using the word violent. It’s not as brutal as people think.

roller derby expert after hours There are a lot of referees involved in the game and, if they catch you doing something intentional towards another player that can hurt them, you’ll be given a penalty or possibly taken off. There is only a certain area on the body where you can hit people and that’s not above the shoulders and it’s not below the knees. You can’t elbow people or punch people, or anything like that. It’s like any contact sport, you can get hurt. But I have had worse injuries from soccer than from roller derbies believe it or not. Really? I always thought it was very violent? A lot of people do, but we have a lot of protective gear as well. Have you had any bad hits? None that have made me want to stop playing. I have had a few where I’ve thought, oh, that’s a goodie or that’s going to hurt later, but I’ve always got back into it. Could you roller skate before getting into roller derbies? Yeah, I have been roller skating ever since I was a kid, so I had the skills before getting involved. I thought it would be a fun chance to do something I really enjoyed as a kid. How long have you been

IN ACTION: Kay Newton (left) has been competing in roller derbies since 2009.

involved in roller derbies? Since September of 2009. I have played for the same team the whole time as well. There were quite a few of us just discovering what roller derby was. Where you nervous before your first game?

It was so long ago now I can’t really remember, but yeah, I think I would have been. I mean who wouldn’t be? I think it’s the same feeling before playing in any sport. I was nervous and anxious, but I was excited too. It’s basically the same feeling

before any game I think. But you practice and train before, so you are prepared for the game. How do you train? I don’t want to give too many secrets away about our training. We practice layouts and tactics and things like that, making sure the team works well and everyone is on the same page. But we have a really strong core team, so we already work really well together. Do you balance work with training? I work for Vivace Espresso. I drive around the city teaching people how to make coffee so they can keep Christchurch caffeinated basically. Has much changed in the game over the years? The rules have changed a bit over the years. Our rules come from the American roller derby league. So when they make changes or alter the rules of the game or safety rules or something, we do the same. So there have been small changes over the years. Have you noticed roller derby change in popularity? I can’t really say if the sport has gained or lost popularity, but our team has always done well. We have had members come and

go for various reasons; they don’t want to do this anymore, or they want to pursue different things, or they decide to have a family, so they come and go throughout the sport, but we always have a great team. What are some of your highlights from roller derby? There have been a couple. I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but I represented New Zealand at the 2011 World Cup in Toronto and the 2014 World Cup in Dallas. That required a lot of fundraising because it’s not a cheap event to take part in. I was really shocked actually because my team presented me with a cheque to help me out. I cried when they did that. I was really surprised and couldn’t believe they had given me that support. They are some of my really close friends. You’ve got a big roller derby meet coming up as well, right? Yeah, this weekend actually. We’re facing off against Wellington, which will be a really good game. We are currently ranked third in New Zealand and they are number one. We played them previously and they beat us by 150 points, so we really want to redeem that. Really looking forward to facing off.

Fashion show will raise money for playground By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HALSWELL SCHOOL and the surrounding community will be strutting the catwalk this week in a bid to fundraise for a new playground and fitness track. A vintage fashion show will be presented by the school, featuring more than 100 outfits and accessories from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The idea was ignited by Deborah Gill-Smith, who is wellknown in the community for having a large range of vintage clothing. Teachers, nine pupils, dads and even principal Bruce Topham will feature in the show. The money raised from the show will go towards a playground specifically for year 5 and 6 pupils and a fitness track for year 7 and 8 pupils. The two projects are estimated to cost about $100,000. Teacher Carmel Hooper said the pupils have been looking at other schools and city council playgrounds to get ideas. Upon completion of the two projects, the school plans to plant a native area. Mrs Hooper said the show is also a social event for the com-

munity to come together and dress up. “People wanting to go in the best-dressed competition will have the opportunity to hop up on the catwalk at half-time,” she said. The day will include music,

raffles and prizes for bestdressed. The show will be held on Saturday, September 10 at 2pm and 7pm in Halswell School’s stadium. Tickets for children will cost $15, while adults will cost $25.

BURNSIDE PRIMARY School pupils have created their own native garden. What started out as picking rubbish up on the school grounds, developed into a weekly weeding and reading session. Teacher Claire Mouat said it was important to teach the pupils about looking after nature. “We are kaitiaki, or guardians of the space. While we are here, [we] learn to work and play in the area with little impact on the native fauna and flora,” she said. She, along with the pupils, have worked together to re-plant

areas, extend the native garden with annual planting to attract more native animals, as well as water and take care of the plants. She said: “We encourage all students to use different spaces for different purposes; to build huts, natural toys [and] imaginative play. [This] includes a sand pit, orienteering, play areas, encouraging respectful use for students of all ages.” Pupil-led monitors and a timetable will be established to ensure they know how to use the native garden as a positive space to enjoy during their own time.

New dog rules start in spring New rules around dogs, and what their owners are required to do, are in effect from Thursday 1 September 2016. Major changes to the general rules include: • All dog owners must carry plastic bags to clean up dog poo when in public places.

• We are local, we are global • We are proud to help where we are needed • We enjoy good friendship, support and giving back

One of the annual benefactors has always been the Christchurch City Mission. This year instead of a cash donation the club decided to approach the City Mission to see what items were of immediate need. As it turns out, high on the priority list were blankets and toiletries. It seems obvious these goods were very well received by the looks on the faces of the people in the photograph.

Girls’ High chefs award winning crispy chicken

SCHOOLS

By Caitlin Miles TWO Christchurch Girls’ High School students have taken gold in a national culinary competition. Emily Perkins, of Hororata, and Bridget James, of Whitecliffs, competed in the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge in Auckland last week. The girls took third place and received a gold medal, with a score of 92/100. The pair qualified for the national competition after winning the Christchurch regional final. The competition involved creating four portions of an entree and a main dish in 90 minutes. Hospitality teacher Holy Caird helped them prepare for the competition. Miss Caird said she was proud of how the girls performed under pressure in the busy kitchen. “Myself and the school are immensely proud of the girls, they have done really well.” Miss Caird said. The girls faced off against eight teams. As an entree, they made herbed silverbeet and feta

For a main, they made crispy skin chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella, semi-dried tomatoes and basil served with potato gnocchi, grilled baby bell peppers and pancetta, and caramelised brussels sprouts on corn cream sauce.

A Riccarton High School student won the individual competition at Otago University’s annual brain bee competition held recently. Daniel Wei has now been selected to represent the South Island in the Australia-New Zealand brain bee final in Tasmania in early December. About 80 year 11 high school students from around the South Island gathered in Dunedin to compete against each other by answering questions about

Big future for Lopas CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School’s Jack Lopas is a rower with “tonnes of promise” following his world junior rowing gold medal. Canterbury Rowing regional manger John Wylie praised the 17-year-old’s performance, saying he is one to look out for in the future. “He has tonnes of power. He’s got good technique and he is somebody who we believe is going to continue to improve,” he said. Lopas and rowing partner Lenny Jenkins, of Whakatane, won gold in the double sculls final on the last night of the junior championships at the Willem-Alexander Baan Rowing Course in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The gold medal added to five other medals won by New Zealand representatives at the combined junior, under-23 and senior world rowing championships. Former Christchurch Boys’ High School student Tom Clyma got bronze in the men’s coxless four; former Christ’s College student Cameron Smith placed fourth in the junior men’s eight; former Christ’s College student Hugo Elworthy got bronze in the men’s coxless four and Sam Bosworth won gold in the men’s

the halfway point, Belarus had dropped off, giving Lopas and Jenkins the chance to surge past. They went on to overtake Germany and clinch the gold medal with a time of 6m, 26.19s. Earlier in the year, Lopas won the national under-19 double

sculls, under-18 double sculls, and under-18 single sculls titles, earning himself a trial to represent New Zealand. During the trial, Lopas set a national record for a 2km erg, beating Olympic gold medallist Hamish Bond’s time of 6.03s by almost a half second.

Lifeguard memorabilia sought By Ian Stuart NORTH BEACH surf lifeguards have put their hands up for help. The North Beach Surf Lifesaving Club will celebrate 100 years of service to the community later this year and is looking for former members and memorabilia for its centennial celebrations at Labour weekend. Chairman Roger Smith said the club had contacted former members but many could not be found. “We are extraordinarily proud of our record of never having had a drowning in the patrolled area of our beach since we began patrols in 1916,” he said. “The North Beach community has been incredibly supportive of the club over the years and we are asking locals to help us track down former members. So if anyone in the community may know of former club members, we would ask them to make contact.” The club has patrolled the beach every weekend during the summer and carried out thousands of rescues and preventive actions. For further information, please phone Mr Smith on 027 366 6195.

Friendly approach puts patients at ease Anyone needing new dentures is invited to contact Better Denture, phone 349 5050, for a free consultation. The clinic is spacious and welcoming, and patients are invited to bring someone with them for support at any appointment if they wish.

At Better Denture, the denture clinic situated in Brynley Street, Hornby, the aim is to take the hassle out of getting new teeth, says experienced dental technician and owner Chris Castle. “We focus on making it easier for people coming here to have dentures made or maintained with our relaxed environment and friendly approach.”

Located at 6 Brynley Street Hornby, Better Denture is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm and Saturday, 10am-12pm. Off-street parking and wheelchair access is available.

Chris understands that people can be a bit nervous about coming into a dental clinic, but he makes sure everyone feels welcome and comfortable at Better Denture by breaking down those barriers and putting them at ease. The process of having new dentures made and fitted usually takes four appointments, and Chris explains the process step by step so patients understand what’s being done. “Every set of dentures is made to suit the individual, allowing us to customise every aspect of the process. We also aim to cater toward the upkeep of existing dentures, with same day repairs and relines on offer,

as well as being available on Saturdays, allowing us to work around even the busiest schedules,” he says. “We are focused on providing a ‘Better Denture’ experience for every individual patient. From the initial consultation, through the settling in stages after the dentures have been fitted and then the maintenance thereafter, we are here to provide the best possible service.”

Your Local Views Michelle Pate responds to the Western News article on a new primary school proposed for western Halswell: I think a new primary school is essential because of the growing population. There is no need for a high school in the Halswell area as we are zoned for Hillmorton High School and this school is not at capacity. A high percentage of Halswell parents think they are better than people living in the HillmortonHoon Hay area and refuse to send their “precious”

children there. A huge pack mentality of anti-Hillmorton High School parents live in Halswell. They would rather sell their house and move into another school area such as Lincoln or Riccarton than send their child to our local school. I am very ashamed of living in the area with people so judgemental. The high school does not deserve the reputation it has acquired – historical gossip by people not even willing to give it a go. The parents pass their judgements onto their child and now we have this young generation mirroring their

parent’s attitudes. One child I can think of made fun of children going to Hillmorton High School saying they would not get a job because they that school written on their CV. I wonder where she got this attitude from. Halswell is a community divided. Once upon a time kids in a community went to their local school, now we have children in this area attending multiple high schools, many of them to avoid our local high school – crazy. •What do readers think of Michelle Pate’s views, email georgia. oconnor@starmedia. kiwi

Check bathroom heat lamps

By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer NOT EVERYONE will be aware that the Fire Service are responding with St John to serious illness incidents. Apparently some people have been upset to see a fire truck arrive in their time of need, possibly thinking their call has been misunderstood and the wrong service has arrived. That’s not the case. Both

services will be sent. Sometimes that means our crew will arrive first. We’re not paramedics but we are all first-aid trained and there are times our crews’ input is invaluable to our ambulance colleagues. Twenty-one calls this week were in this category, one fifth of all our call-outs. A bit of a blast from the past in Halswell this week, where a three-way light/ heat lamp/extractor in a

bathroom ceiling caught on fire. Some years ago this problem was more prevalent. New installations require the fan to automatically operate when the heat lamp is turned on, but previously, and obviously in the unit in Halswell, the heat lamps could be turned on alone. They tended to overheat the surrounding plastic and sometimes ignite. If you have one of these have it checked out.

Vital Greens contains a balanced blend of nutritionally rich vegetables, fruits, minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids,
